Committed to making a positive impact on the environment, one national government agency created an energy and sustainability program to position itself as a leader in using planet-friendly technologies. This agency’s efforts include the use of alternative fuel-capable vehicles and solar panels to reduce its facilities’ energy consumption from the grid.

The agency focused on making its buildings more energy efficient with GridPoint’s advanced monitoring and control systems. The GridPoint Energy Management System (EMS) is designed to monitor, connect and control smart energy devices for the most efficient use of energy and the lowest possible facility-related costs.

GridPoint Supports Federal Energy Conservation Goals

GridPoint’s team met with the agency’s management to discuss the viability of implementing energy management and submetering technology into its facilities. After a thorough review of all agency facilities, a single pilot site in the southeast was selected to provide testing and verification of the proposed system. The solution was designed to set parameters that determined where and how energy was to be used throughout the 20,000 square foot building.

The GridPoint EMS allowed the agency to:

Immediately after installation, the GridPoint EMS identified three building exhaust fans, two electric water heaters, and three electric baseboard heaters were running 24 hours a day, allowing for immediate cost-saving and corrective changes to be made. Additional energy use information provided by GridPoint’s data analyst team offered a wealth of data on the performance of other equipment. Leveraging the visibility and analysis provided by the GridPoint EMS, the agency was able to set the appropriate parameters to perform preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and outages.

Successful Pilot Program Leads to Additional Testing

The cost of the GridPoint EMS was recovered in less than 16 months — producing a 19% reduction in electricity usage and a 61% reduction in natural gas usage. This successful trial encouraged the agency to expand to a 16-site pilot. The sites vary in size from 2,700 to 78,000 square feet, totaling more than 300,000 square feet.

Two years later, these 16 sites continue to beat expectations. The incorporation of the GridPoint EMS has saved the agency more than three billion BTUs and more than one million pounds of carbon emissions and is expected to continue producing similar results. Most importantly, the results of GridPoint’s smart energy solution encouraged the institution of repeatable, corporate energy policies across its network of distribution centers.
