GridPoint Disaster Recovery Framework allows retailer to maintain business continuity, reduce financial impact

Arlington, VA – June 3, 2013 – GridPoint, Inc., a recognized leader in energy management and sustainability solutions that help customers maximize operational and energy savings, today announced it has released its Disaster Recovery White Paper to showcase how GridPoint’s integrated suite of energy management solutions and Managed Services played a critical role in maintaining business continuity for one major retailer in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, one of the most catastrophic storms in U.S. history.

By utilizing the cloud-based GridPoint Energy Manager analytics software suite, the retailer was able to quickly assess site power and equipment performance through a variety of sophisticated reports and dashboards. The remote monitoring, management, and granular visibility of site operations, including equipment, environmental conditions, and refrigerated inventory enabled the retailer’s disaster recovery and facility management teams to focus their attention on re-opening stores and optimizing on-the-ground operations.

For example, the retailer leveraged GridPoint’s granular submetering data, detailed visibility, and analysis to monitor how equipment recovered from the loss of power during the disaster. Here, GridPoint Energy Manager pinpointed when refrigeration systems were not operating at the preset temperature parameters and identified malfunctioning equipment. In one store, GridPoint Energy Manager identified that one type of refrigerator rack had been automatically shut off because the unit was not receiving the proper voltage to cool appropriately. Armed with this information, the facility manager could use GridPoint’s energy management system to verify that the refrigerators were operating properly, and the inventory had maintained adequate temperatures, potentially avoiding thousands of dollars in destroyed inventory.

“GridPoint’s integrated solution allowed a large North American retailer and grocer to proactively plan for the anticipated hurricane, and then remotely monitor and manage their recovery after the storm had passed,” said GridPoint CEO John Spirtos. “Most importantly, the retailer could assist the communities that were most severely impacted by the hurricane and access the emergency supplies, medicine, and food items that are so vital in a disaster situation.”

  • Near real-time visibility of equipment performance and problem diagnosis to prevent the loss of valuable food, pharmaceutical, and climate-sensitive inventory;
  • Actionable analysis, allowing the retailer to prioritize needs based on power supply, potential inventory loss, and equipment failure; and
  • Increased business continuity while driving faster site and equipment recovery time.
